Wilko, Not the first place you would think to look for makeup, I always go in there for bleach and bin liners, but back in late 2013 early 2014 Wilko started stocking a range of beauty products that retail for around 99p-£3.99.
To be honest these did not really register on my radar until I saw a few Youtube mentions and thought ‘let’s see what all the fuss is about’. I decided to go for my makeup faves which are lip gloss, eyeshadow and Nail varnish, and I think most of them cost about £1.60, not bad if they did a good job.
Did I have high hopes, well honestly No. I find that with a few exceptions cheap makeup is usually ‘pretty f*****g terrible’ to put it bluntly. The formulations are usually bad and the ingredients are awful. So how did I get on with Essence??
Let’s start with the lip gloss. I bought the XXXL shine gloss in the colour nude kiss which is a pretty pink shade. Colour wise it is lovely and I did find it to be very glossy, but it says on the tube it is moisturising and that’s where it lets itself down, after wearing it for a full day I found my lips did feel quite dry afterwards and I don’t normally have that problem with my other glosses. lastability is good though.
On to the 3D eyeshadow. This is full on metallic shine, think 70’s disco. If glitter or shine is not your thing on the lids then avoid like the plague. I personally like it but I would advise you don’t go in heavy handed. I got the shade 03 ‘irresistible choco cupcake’ which is a duo peachy shade and a chocolate brown, both look lovely on the lid and last a long time, though I did use primer. Just watch out for fallout as you apply it, I did end up with it on my cheek!.
The Nail varnish I went for was the gel top coat, gel nail polish in a Barbie pink, and a glitter polish [which I am currently obsessed with] that was in a section called the Nudes. The gel polish is good though I would advise you to wear a good couple of coats, the topcoat adds a nice glossy finish and it did last a few days before chipping, though the star for me was the glitter polish, that bad boy was on my nails for days and no chips, I think it will have to be rubbed off with sandpaper!!.
Final thoughts, all things considered I do like the Essence range and I am keen to try the blushers out now, and perhaps a few more of the eyeshadows. For the price they are not bad quality at all, I have not delved too much into the ingredients because to be honest I have not researched them, I am sure that they are not the best in the world, but if you want some cheap makeup that works well then give them a try.
